What to see · interior guide

Step into a dark and quiet underground world.

Filled with water, columns, and soft lights — the Basilica Cistern interior offers a unique experience that feels very different from other places in Istanbul.

Many visitors combine the Basilica Cistern with Hagia Sophia or Topkapi Palace on the same day because both are close to the Old City's main highlights.

Here is everything you should not miss during your visit.

01 · The 336 Columns

A forest of 336 marble columns.

The cistern is supported by 336 tall marble columns.

They are placed in long rows, creating the feeling of an underground forest.

Each column has a different design. Some show Corinthian, Doric, or Ionic styles, which add even more detail to the space. Some come from ancient temples, which gives the space a unique and historic look.

02 · The Medusa Heads

Two heads, one mystery.

The Medusa heads are the most famous part of the cistern.

You will find them in the far corner of the building.

One head is upside down, and the other is placed sideways. Their origin is still unknown, which makes them one of the biggest mysteries here.

Photographer's tip. Follow the walking path to the back to find them easily. For photos, the best angle is from the front-left side, where both the head and the base of the column are clearly visible.

03 · The Hen's Eye Column

The crying column.

This column is covered with patterns that look like tears.

It is believed to honor the workers who died during the construction.

It is one of the most meaningful and emotional details inside the cistern.

04 · Water Reflections

Still water, still magic.

The still water creates beautiful water reflections of the columns and lights.

This makes the space feel calm and almost magical.

It is also one of the best places for photos.
